Like healthcare organizations across the nation, we at Central Virginia Health Services (CVHS) face significant administrative pressures every day. Naturally, we pride ourselves on providing superb care, but too often my colleagues and I have found that clinical documentation has a way of distracting us from what matters — focusing on patients.

When we stopped to quantify the time we were spending on administrative tasks, we found that manual charting was consuming 8 to 10 hours of each provider’s time every week. That was leading to cognitive overload and increased provider burnout, while disrupting work-life balance.

We knew we needed a transformative solution. And we found exactly that with Sunoh.ai, an AI medical scribe that has improved how we manage clinical documentation. With Sunoh.ai, we have enhanced patients’ access to care while improving the work-life balance for our providers.

The Challenge: Documentation Overload and Physician Burnout

At CVHS, our mission is to deliver comprehensive, high-quality care — medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy, and imaging services. Yet, our providers were spending excessive time on paperwork after clinic hours, often extending their workdays well beyond scheduled shifts.

We had relied on telephone dictation systems, and while those systems worked, they were not as efficient as we had hoped. They also did not integrate directly into eClinicalWorks, the EHR that we use across the more than 20 clinic locations in our system.

Some of our providers were feeling overwhelmed by having to switch between interacting with patients and taking notes. At times, they felt that compromised their ability to fully engage with patients during visits.

Sunoh.ai was the first truly AI-powered system we used and has helped us move toward more advanced technologies.

Why Sunoh.ai Was a Game Changer

Sunoh.ai stood out as a truly innovative AI medical scribe because of its seamless integration with eClinicalWorks. Through the eClinicalTouch® app, Sunoh.ai operates directly within our existing clinical workflows on any device with just a simple click. This meant no additional hardware or complicated setup, making adoption smooth and effortless.

Most importantly, Sunoh.ai delivers clinic-ready notes for our physicians to review. These drafts include comprehensive and concise History of Present Illness (HPI) sections.

Moreover, Sunoh.ai generates draft notes very quickly. Almost immediately after a patient encounters ends, the physician can review the note, make any necessary edits, and complete that encounter’s documentation.

Positive Outcomes: More Patients, Better Care, and Work-Life Balance

Since implementing Sunoh.ai, the impact on our providers and patients has been remarkable.

Jill Richmond, one of our family nurse practitioners, notes that Sunoh.ai allows her to see three to five additional patients daily, focus on patient care, reduce administrative burdens, and improve work-life balance.

Similarly, Daezel Lacanlale, FNP, notes, “Instead of charting 8 to 10 hours a week during admin time, Sunoh.ai has cut that time in half. This reduction in workload has lessened my burnout and improved my work-life balance.”

From an operational perspective, Sunoh.ai’s ability to help providers complete documentation before leaving the practice each day has been a game changer.

As I often say, “Sunoh.ai is a game changer if you’re looking to reduce burnout and improve productivity because it decreases our providers’ cognitive load and streamlines workflows.”

Looking Ahead: Embracing Healthcare AI for Sustainable Practice

The healthcare landscape continues to evolve rapidly, and AI medical scribes like Sunoh.ai are at the forefront of this transformation. For Federally Qualified Health Centers like CVHS, which serve diverse and often underserved populations, embracing healthcare AI not only addresses provider burnout but also expands patient access and improves clinical outcomes.

Our experience demonstrates that thoughtful implementation of AI tools — especially those integrated seamlessly with existing EHR systems — can create a sustainable balance between technology and human-centered care.
