Indiana University (IU) Health Centers, located on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses, provide full medical services for more than 70,000 students. The University was founded on the principles of providing broad access to undergraduate, graduate and continuing education for students throughout Indiana, the United States, and the world, as well as outstanding academic, cultural and student services.

Problem

With over 2,000 square feet dedicated to paper records, the health center understood its current paper-based system had become a detriment to the quality of care delivered to students. As a result, the health center needed to implement a comprehensive EHR system to meet its goals of improving efficient and streamlining workflows. IU looked for a technology that could handle 300 patient visits to the medical clinic, women’s clinic, counseling department, and physical therapy clinic. The uniqueness of a university health center provided a challenge for any EHR.

Solution

eClinicalWorks’ comprehensive EHR solution, with unified practice management, exceeded the requirements of Indiana University Health Center. The system improved the quality of care through reporting capabilities and the ability to share data between locations and departments. The EHR had the ability to effectively document its encounters, capture more discrete data, and leverage that data for reporting quality requirements and measurements. Combining the Electronic Medical Record, practice management, Patient Portal, interoperability, mobile and messaging capabilities — all unified and linked via a single database — allowed the health center to advance patient care.

Results

After installing eClinicalWorks, Indiana University Health Center now has the ability, through the Patient Portal, to educate students on their health, providing a location to securely store and seamlessly share health information with family providers. The adoption of the EHR makes it faster and easier to manage staff and to efficiently communicate within the health center. IU also has the capability to measure and streamline protocols and procedures to generate financial, clinical, and administrative reporting using eClinicalWorks eBO. With eBO, scheduling a report is very intuitive and any report can be generated within 20 minutes. Now, the health center can provide the utmost care to the 300 students who visit daily.

“I was asked how many unique visits we had in the past year. eBO let me create a report in 10 minutes,” explained Tamir Hussain, Clinical Applications Project Manager. “With our previous EHR, these same reports would take hours, if not days, to complete.”
