Primary Care Information Project Brings Electronic Health Records to 2,800 Physicians Serving More Than Two Million Patients

WESTBOROUGH, Mass.—September 1, 2011—eClinicalWorks®, a market leader in ambulatory clinical systems, today announced that eClinicalWorks’ customer New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene received a 2011 HIMSS Public Health Davies Award of Excellence for its Primary Care Information Project (PCIP). The award, which honors excellence in implementing electronic health records (EHRs), was presented last week at the 2011 Public Health Informatics Conference.

“We were honored to have been given this award for the innovative technologies we have developed with eClinicalWorks,” said Dr. Amanda Parsons, Deputy Commissioner, NYC Health Department. ”Our query and alert system, combined with our quality database, allow us to give providers important tools they need to improve the care of their patients.”

The PCIP is designed to improve the quality of care in underserved communities and has deployed eClinicalWorks’ prevention-oriented EHR to more than 2,800 NYC primary care providers serving more than two million patients. This integrated healthcare system includes 541 independent practices, 38 community health centers and three hospitals.

From the HIMSS press release, “a recent study of practices participating in PCIP, 52% of patients had their high cholesterol managed more effectively (up from 39% at the outset), 56% of those with high blood pressure had it under control (up from 49%), and 20% of those with diabetes controlled their A1c levels (up from 14%).”

“We at the New York City Health Department are honored to receive this recognition for our Primary Care Information Project’s success in influencing the health of New Yorkers through health information technology,” said Dr. Thomas Farley, New York City Health Commissioner. “Health information from this project not only helps us identify City-wide public health issues, it provides physicians with unprecedented feedback about the health of their patients. We look forward to the continued success of this program and to sharing what we’ve learned with other public health organizations and municipalities.”

“The Primary Care Information Project has been a ground-breaking initiative and we are honored to be a partner,” said Girish Kumar Navani, CEO and co-founder of eClinicalWorks. “Through this project, improvements in quality of care have been demonstrated with the aid of an EHR. This marks the fourth consecutive year that an eClinicalWorks customer has been awarded the prestigious HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence, making us extremely proud and motivating us to take our solutions even further. We congratulate the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene on receiving this prestigious award.”

The PCIP joins Open Door Family Medical Center, Urban Health Plan, White River Rural Health and New York Children’s Health Project as eClinicalWorks’ customers that have received HIMSS Davies Awards.

About HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence

The HIMSS Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence recognizes excellence in the implementation and use of health information technology, specifically electronic health records (EHRs), for healthcare organizations, private practices, public health systems, and community health organizations. Created by CPRI-HOST in 1994, the first three recipients of the Davies Organizational Award were recognized in 1995. In 2002, CPRI-HOST merged with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), and now, HIMSS manages the award program. The Award honors Dr. Nicholas E. Davies, an Atlanta-based practicing physician, president-elect of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the Institute of Medicine Committee on Improving the Patient Record, who died in 1991 in a plane crash.
