From ‘Try to Remember’ to Better Interoperability With PRISMA

How eClinicalWorks is building on the healthcare IT revolution
In less than a generation, there has been a dramatic transformation in interoperability, the sharing of clinical patient data among providers and facilities.
For many years, the standard for interoperability could best be described as “Try to remember.” Physicians relied upon in-house records, questionnaires, and information gathered during patient visits.
Too often, critical information was overlooked, literally lost in a paper shuffle, or trapped in another healthcare system’s records — obtainable only at great cost and effort.
The ‘Moneyball’ analogy: A different way of thinking
The arrival of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems meant physicians could store more data than ever before. But like a baseball team using traditional statistical measures to decide where to spend its money for fresh talent — and consistently underperforming — many practices were stuck in old thinking.
In 2002, Major League Baseball’s Oakland Athletics took a new approach. The team’s “Moneyball” approach rethought which statistics mattered most and let them focus on underpriced value. The Athletics were able to compete with much wealthier clubs, recorded a 20-game win streak, and claimed a division title. The approach they pioneered was applied by the Boston Red Sox to win the World Series in 2004.
Data, data everywhere, but not a lot to link
Similarly, 2004 marked a change in thinking about healthcare IT with the creation of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. By 2010, billions of dollars had been made available to help practices convert to EHR systems.
Next came the development of two nationwide networks for exchanging that data — Carequality® and the CommonWell® Health Alliance.
Still missing, however, were effective ways to manage and link all that data to make it more useful at the point of care.
‘One patient, one record’ for better care
As a member of Carequality and CommonWell, eClinicalWorks® recognized the value and unfulfilled potential of these networks. We identified that missing link and developed PRISMA — the industry’s first health information search engine — to maximize the value of patient information.
Once you activate PRISMA, requests for patient records use the CommonWell and Carequality networks to locate records from primary care providers, specialists, clinics, urgent care centers, and hospitals. PRISMA then creates a searchable, timeline view of each patient’s health history. Providers can click on any part of a patient’s record and conduct smart searches to locate conditions, diagnoses, treatments, and medications.
Value beyond the daily encounter
PRISMA’s value extends beyond the patient encounter as well. Providers can:
- Save an external record as part of their patient’s record in eClinicalWorks
- Create a list of all providers who have seen a given patient
- Use healow Hub to view data from wearable health trackers and medical devices
