3 Practices Using Telehealth to Improve Patient Care

Shortly after the practice switched over to televisits, Dr. Shah received a call from a patient. The patient was vomiting, had diarrhea, and was suffering from abdominal pain. Dr. Shah quickly set up a televisit with the patient and asked what the vomit looked like. The patient said it looked black, showing Dr. Shah a jar of black vomit. Dr. Shah knew that the patient was bleeding internally and advised him to go to the hospital immediately.
Once the patient made it to the hospital, he received the necessary care and the bleeding was stopped. “He said that we saved his life because of that televisit,” said Dr. Shah. “So, I think that televisits have transformed the way I practice medicine.”

Darice Koepke, a clinical admin at Entira® Family Clinics, a 12-provider practice located in St. Paul, Minnesota, is enjoying the simple and secure remote care that televisits are bringing to the practice’s patient base.

Koepke also talks about how two siblings had a rash, and the doctor didn’t know what to prescribe them. Through a televisit, the doctor was able to take a close look at the rash and prescribe the proper medication without the mother having to bring the children into the office and increase their risk of contracting the virus.
Providers at Potomac Urology, a 12-provider practice with two locations in Alexandria and Woodbridge, Virginia, are utilizing healow TeleVisits to reduce ER visits and expand patients’ access to care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Nilay M. Gandhi, a urologist at the practice, talks about a patient with urinary symptoms that, if left untreated, could have led to an ER visit. Because of a televisit, the patient received the care in a quick and effective way.
The fact that patients can now join a televisit through a text/email link has also been huge in the rapid increase in usage at Potomac Urology. “It really has altered and improved patient care, and that’s what we’re all in this for.”
