3 Practices Finding Success With Telehealth
As telehealth usage continues to grow amid the COVID-19 pandemic, practices everywhere are finding new and exciting ways to expand their access to care.
Here are three practices that are utilizing healow TeleVisits™ in ways that continue to change the way medicine is practiced.
Healing Hands of Nebraska
Imagine caring for a patient that lives on the other side of the world. Providers at Healing Hands of Nebraska, a two-provider practice with three locations, are already making this idea a reality.
Michelle Johnson, the Chief Operating Officer of the practice, explains that the specialized surgery performed at the practice is only done by a handful of surgeons. For a patient who lives in Ireland, a 45-minute consultation via televisit makes much more sense than having to fly to the office and then back home.
Johnson also talks about a high-risk patient who lives at a nursing home. She explains that when the patient leaves the nursing home, she needs two nursing home employees to help her get around. Televisits have been instrumental in easing stress for this patient.
“We’ve already done two televisit appointments with her, and she’s been so happy. She’s also avoiding any exposure to the virus.”
At Los Angeles-based APLA Health, Dr. Sean Boileau and his colleagues have been able to continue to provide mental health counseling services to their patients, 80% of whom have chosen to use telehealth options for their visits.
Since implementing televisits, Dr. Boileau has noticed a positive difference in a patient with severe anxiety.
“He’s been much more relaxed. We haven’t had to take up 10 to 15 minutes in the beginning of the session getting him stable and emotionally regulated so that he can engage in therapy.”
Televisits are also beneficial for patients facing economic challenges. It’s much easier for a patient to sit at home in front of a computer screen rather than pay extra money for gas or public transportation to get to the office.
Worldwide Pediatrics Group
Dr. Juan C. Millon, a pediatrician who runs a two-provider practice in both Doral & Plantation, Florida, has increased his use of healow TeleVisits™ by approximately 50% since the COVID-19 pandemic began, allowing him to see patients who might otherwise not have access to care.
Telehealth is allowing him to see patients for a range of ailments, including upper respiratory infections, rashes, and mild coughs — and in the case of one child with asthma, enabled him to help the mother assist her child with a nebulizer, thus avoiding an ER visit.
“I encourage everyone to keep trying telehealth. Think of it as another of visit for your patients – you see them in the hospital, you see them in your office, and now you’re seeing them in their home.”
